How the Company Number format works
- Format
- 9 digits starting with 5, with a Luhn check digit
- Example
- 520013954
Things to watch for
- Numbers starting 51 are typically private companies and 52 public companies; other 5x ranges cover entity types such as partnerships and non-profit associations
- Individuals and sole traders use their 9-digit Teudat Zehut instead — it uses the same Luhn check, so this page accepts only the 5-prefixed corporate range
- Checksum only — a pass doesn't confirm the company is registered or active
^5[0-9]{8}$An Israeli company number (מספר חברה, often shown as ח.פ.) is the 9-digit number the Israeli Corporations Authority assigns when it registers a company — for example 520013954. Company numbers begin with 5, and the ninth digit is a Luhn check digit calculated from the other eight. The same number appears on tax invoices, contracts and the company’s entry in the companies register. This page is for finance and procurement teams checking Israeli suppliers and customers.
Company number vs Teudat Zehut
| Company number | Teudat Zehut | |
|---|---|---|
| Issued by | Israeli Corporations Authority | Population and Immigration Authority |
| Identifies | Companies and other registered corporations | Individuals, including people trading in their own name |
| Length | 9 digits, beginning with 5 | 9 digits, with shorter numbers padded by leading zeros |
| Check digit | Luhn | Luhn |
How the Luhn check works
Starting from the check digit, every second digit moving left — the 2nd, 4th, 6th and 8th from the right — is doubled, with 9 subtracted from any result above 9, and all nine values are added. The total must be divisible by 10; for 520013954 it’s 30. Because a personal ID number passes exactly the same arithmetic, the leading 5 is what keeps this page focused on corporate numbers.
Why check it before using it
A company number is often copied by hand from a PDF invoice or a letterhead into an accounting system or a contract template. Luhn catches any single wrong digit and most swaps of adjacent digits, so a quick check here flags the typo before it’s stored against the wrong entity.
What a pass doesn’t tell you
The calculation runs in your browser and confirms only that the nine digits are mathematically consistent. It can’t tell you that the Corporations Authority has registered the company, that it’s still active rather than dissolved, or which company the number belongs to.
Scope: this page and tool cover Israeli company number format and checksum validation only — not registration status or company details.

Company Number FAQ
What does ח.פ. mean next to an Israeli company's name?
ח.פ. abbreviates חברה פרטית, 'private company', and it's the label commonly printed before a company number on Israeli invoices and letterheads. The number that follows is the 9-digit company number this tool checks.
Why does an Israeli company number start with 5?
Registered corporations in Israel are numbered in a range that begins with 5, and the second digit typically points to the type of body — 51 for private companies and 52 for public companies, with other 5x ranges used for entities such as partnerships and non-profit associations.
Can I check a sole trader's business number here?
No. Someone trading in their own name uses their 9-digit Teudat Zehut rather than a company number. It uses the same Luhn check, but this page only accepts the 5-prefixed corporate range, so check those numbers with the Teudat Zehut validator instead.
