That 20-character account segment is the longest single block of any IBAN covered on this site — roughly twice the length of the account portion in many European formats — because it carries forward Azerbaijan’s existing domestic account-numbering scheme rather than shortening it for IBAN. Anyone wiring money to Azerbaijan, paying a supplier there, or filling in a form that asks for an IBAN instead of a local account number needs all 28 characters entered correctly, letters included.
How this validator works
The check confirms the “AZ” prefix, that the bank-code block is exactly 4 letters, and that the account block is exactly 20 alphanumeric characters, then runs the real mod-97 checksum (ISO 7064) Azerbaijani banks use to generate valid IBANs — entirely client-side, nothing sent anywhere, result as soon as you stop typing.
What a pass doesn’t tell you
A pass means the 28 characters are internally consistent, not that the account exists or is currently open. This tool does no bank-name resolution and makes no contact with any bank or the Central Bank of Azerbaijan. If a number you’ve typed fails, check the boundary between the 4-letter bank code and the long account block first — it’s the easiest place to drop or duplicate a character when copying by hand.
Scope: structure and mod-97 checksum validation only — not payment processing, bank-name lookup, or proof an account is active. Use it to catch a typo before a transfer fails; your bank confirms the account itself.

Why is Azerbaijan's bank code 4 letters when neighboring Georgia uses only 2?

Azerbaijan mirrors the 4-letter SWIFT-style bank code many European formats use; Georgia opted for a shorter 2-character code. Both are equally valid within their own country's rules.
Does a passed check confirm the Azerbaijani account is real?
No. This tool only confirms the 28 characters are correctly formatted and pass the mod-97 checksum — it performs no bank lookup and never contacts the Central Bank of Azerbaijan or any commercial bank. Account existence has to be confirmed by the bank or account holder.
