How the Organisationsnummer format works

Format
10 digits (NNNNNN-NNNN); the third digit is at least 2 and the last is a Luhn check digit
Example
5560125790

Things to watch for

  • The first digit hints at the legal form — for example 5 for a limited company (aktiebolag) and 9 for a trading or limited partnership
  • Sole traders use the owner's personnummer as their organisation number; those have a third digit of 0 or 1 and are out of scope here
  • Checksum only — a pass doesn't confirm the organisation is registered or active; the Swedish VAT number is SE + this number + 01
Regex for Organisationsnummer
^[0-9]{2}[2-9][0-9]{7}$

An organisationsnummer is the 10-digit number that identifies a legal entity in Sweden — an aktiebolag (limited company), a trading or limited partnership, an economic association and similar bodies — written as six digits, a hyphen and four digits, for example 556012-5790. Companies receive theirs from Bolagsverket, the Swedish Companies Registration Office, while some other kinds of organisation are numbered by other Swedish authorities. This page is for finance, procurement and invoicing teams checking Swedish counterparties.

What the digits tell you

The first digit hints at the legal form: 5 for an aktiebolag, 9 for a handelsbolag or kommanditbolag. The third digit is always 2 or higher, which keeps organisation numbers clear of the birth-month field in a personnummer, and the tenth digit is a check digit. Three related Swedish numbers are easy to confuse:

Number Written like Identifies
Organisationsnummer 556012-5790 Legal entities (third digit 2 or higher)
Personnummer YYMMDD-NNNN Individuals, including sole traders
VAT number SE556012579001 VAT-registered businesses: SE + the 10 digits + 01

How the Luhn check works here

Starting from the check digit and moving left, every second digit is doubled — subtracting 9 whenever the result is above 9 — and all ten values are added. The total must be divisible by 10; for 5560125790 it comes to 30. This is the same Luhn method Sweden uses for personnummer, and it catches any single mistyped digit and most swaps of neighbouring digits before the number reaches an invoice, a contract or a supplier register.

What a pass doesn’t tell you

The check runs entirely in your browser and confirms only that the ten digits are arithmetically consistent. It can’t show that Bolagsverket has registered the entity, that it’s still active, or that it’s approved for F-tax or registered for VAT with Skatteverket — those need the official registers.

Scope: this page and tool cover organisationsnummer format and checksum validation only — not registration, F-tax or VAT status.

Organisationsnummer FAQ

Why is the third digit of an organisationsnummer always 2 or higher?

So it can't be mistaken for a personnummer. In a personnummer the third and fourth digits are a birth month (01–12), so the third digit is always 0 or 1. Organisation numbers for legal entities start that position at 2 or above, which is how this tool tells the two apart.

How do I turn an organisationsnummer into a Swedish VAT number?

Put SE in front and 01 at the end: 556012-5790 becomes SE556012579001. This tool checks the 10-digit organisationsnummer itself; use the Swedish VAT validator to check the full VAT-number format.

Can I check a sole trader's organisation number here?

No. A sole trader (enskild firma) uses the owner's personnummer as its organisation number, and those have a third digit of 0 or 1, so they're outside this page by design. Use the Swedish personnummer validator for those instead.
