It appears on invoices, contracts, and any official filing tied to that entity, and it stays with the entity for its lifetime.
Why the ninth digit exists
The first 8 digits carry a weighted mod-11 check: each digit is multiplied by a fixed weight (3, 2, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2), the products are summed, and the remainder after dividing by 11 determines the 9th digit. A remainder of 1 would require a check digit of 10, which has no valid single-digit representation — Brønnøysundregistrene never issues, and this validator never accepts, a 9-digit combination that would need it. That’s what lets a single mistyped or transposed digit be caught before it reaches an invoice or accounting system.
Organisasjonsnummer and VAT
The same 9 digits do double duty. A Norwegian organisasjonsnummer registered for VAT is written with the letters MVA appended (Merverdiavgift, Norway’s VAT), so a valid orgnr check is a useful first pass on the numeric part of a Norwegian VAT number — though this tool validates the 9-digit organisasjonsnummer itself, not the MVA suffix.
What this check doesn’t tell you
A pass here confirms the 9 digits are arithmetically consistent — not that the entity is currently active in the Central Coordinating Register, or registered for VAT. Brønnøysundregistrene’s own registers are the authoritative source for current status.
