Dominican Republic Phone Number validator

How the phone number format works

Format
Dominican Republic phone number in national or international (+1) format
Example
+18092345678

Things to watch for

  • Accepts national or international (E.164, e.g. +1...) format
  • Validated with Google's libphonenumber; confirms the number is possible/valid for this country, not that it is currently assigned or reachable
Regex for phone number
^[+]?[0-9 ()\-]{6,}$

A Dominican Republic phone number is a standard 10-digit North American Numbering Plan (NANP) number — 3-digit area code plus 7-digit local number, e.g. 809-234-5678 — sharing the same +1 country code and shape as the US, Canada, and a long list of Caribbean nations. What sets it apart from most NANP members is that all three of its area codes, 809, 829, and 849, cover the entire country rather than different regions; they were layered in as overlays once 809 alone ran out of combinations, not assigned by geography.

How this validator works

Enter the number in local form (809-234-5678) or full international form (+18092345678); this tool checks the digit count and confirms the area code falls within the specific 809/829/849 range assigned to the Dominican Republic, using Google’s libphonenumber entirely client-side. Because NANP membership is shared so widely, distinguishing a Dominican number from a US, Canadian, or Jamaican one depends entirely on that area-code lookup.

What a pass doesn’t tell you

A pass confirms the number has one of the three genuinely Dominican area codes and a plausible local number — it does not confirm the line is connected, ported, or currently held by whoever gave it to you.

Scope: format and area-code-origin validation only, for catching a mistyped digit or a wrong-country assumption before a number reaches a CRM or dialer — not a substitute for a carrier lookup.

phone number FAQ

Why does the Dominican Republic have three area codes (809, 829, 849) instead of one?

Unlike most NANP countries, where different area codes cover different regions, all three of the Dominican Republic's codes serve the entire country simultaneously. 809 was the original code; 829 and 849 were added later as overlays purely because the country ran out of number combinations, not because of any geographic split.

If a number passes this Dominican Republic check, does that rule out it being a US or Canadian number?

Yes, in the sense that it confirms the area code is one of the three assigned specifically to the Dominican Republic rather than a US, Canadian, or other Caribbean NANP code. All share the same +1 country code and 10-digit shape, so it's the area code — not the +1 — that narrows it down.

Does a valid area code mean the Dominican number is currently active?

No. It only confirms the area code and 7-digit local number match a real Dominican NANP pattern — not that the SIM is active or the line reachable, which needs a carrier-side lookup this tool doesn't perform.
