How the postcode format works

Format
4 digits
Example
1010

Things to watch for

  • Format-only check — does not confirm the postcode actually exists
  • The first digit broadly follows geography, running from Northland and Auckland (0–2) down to Otago and Southland (9)
  • PO Box and Private Bag addresses have their own postcodes, separate from the postcode of the street address
Regex for postcode
^[0-9]{4}$

A New Zealand postcode is the 4-digit number NZ Post uses to sort mail, written after the town or city on the last line of an address — Auckland 1010, for example, covers the central city. Every New Zealand postcode is exactly four digits, with no letters, spaces or extended sub-codes, which makes it one of the simpler postal formats to check. This page is for anyone cleaning a New Zealand mailing list, CRM export or checkout form.

The leading-zero trap

The numbering starts in the north, so postcodes in Northland and parts of Auckland begin with 0. When an address list passes through a spreadsheet or a numeric database column, that zero is often silently dropped, and a valid four-digit code becomes a three-digit number. The long-term fix is to store postcodes as text, never as numbers.

You enter Result Why
1010 Passes Exactly four digits
110 Fails Three digits — often a code that lost its leading zero
10100 Fails Five digits
AKL 1010 Fails Contains letters

One organisation, more than one postcode

Street addresses, PO Boxes and Private Bags each carry their own postcodes, so a single business can legitimately appear in your records with two or three different codes. When you’re de-duplicating a customer list or matching invoices to delivery addresses, a postcode mismatch isn’t automatically an error — check which type of address each record uses before merging them.

What a pass doesn’t tell you

There’s no check digit in a New Zealand postcode, so the only thing a client-side tool can confirm is the four-digit shape. A pass doesn’t mean NZ Post has assigned that code, that it matches the suburb or town written next to it, or that mail will reach the address.

Scope: this page and tool cover New Zealand postcode format validation only — not address lookup, suburb matching, or delivery confirmation.

postcode FAQ

What does the first digit of a New Zealand postcode tell you?

Roughly where in the country the address is. NZ Post's numbering runs from Northland and Auckland, whose codes start with 0, 1 or 2, down to Otago and Southland, which start with 9. It's a regional hint only — this tool doesn't check it against the town you've entered.

Why does my PO Box have a different postcode from my street address?

NZ Post gives PO Box and Private Bag addresses their own postcodes, separate from the postcode for the street where the business or household is. Both can be valid at the same time, so use the postcode that matches the address you're actually writing.

Does a correctly formatted NZ postcode mean it exists?

No. Any 4-digit string passes this check. To confirm a postcode is in use and belongs to a particular address, look it up with NZ Post's address and postcode finder.
