^[0-9]{7,8}$Kenya’s National ID number is issued sequentially by the National Registration Bureau, part of the Ministry of Interior and National Administration, and printed on the physical national ID card every citizen aged 18 and over is required to hold — for example 23456789. Because Kenya assigns these numbers in ascending order rather than deriving them from a formula, the digit count has grown over time: cards issued decades ago commonly carry 7 digits, while more recently issued cards run to 8 as the national sequence has climbed.
It’s worth flagging what this checker does not cover: Kenya’s newer “Maisha Namba” is a separate digital identifier being rolled out alongside the existing ID system, and it uses a different, longer numeric scheme than the classic National ID number. This tool is scoped to the established sequential ID number on the physical card, not Maisha Namba.

Why do some Kenyan ID numbers have 7 digits and others 8?
Kenya's National Registration Bureau issues ID numbers sequentially, so older cards carry 7 digits while more recently issued ones have rolled over into 8 digits as the sequence grows. Both lengths are valid, and this checker accepts either.
Is this the same as Kenya's new Maisha Namba?
No. This checker covers the long-standing sequential number on the physical Kenyan National ID card. Maisha Namba is a newer digital identifier using a different, longer numeric scheme, and isn't covered by this tool.
Does a correctly formatted number confirm the ID was actually issued?
No. It only confirms the input is 7 or 8 digits — it can't confirm the National Registration Bureau actually issued that specific number to a real person.
